What Is a White Pine?

An Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus) is an evergreen native to eastern North America. It’s known for long, soft, blue-green needles that grow in bundles of five, flexible, graceful branches and a mild scent. Its feathery texture makes it one of the softest Christmas trees you can choose.

Why Families Choose a White Pine

Run your hand along a White Pine and it feels almost like a feather. Its long, soft needles are gentle on little hands, and they give the tree a full, airy look that’s different from the tighter shape of a fir.

Its branches are flexible and graceful, which makes it perfect for strings of lights, garland and lightweight ornaments. And its mild scent is a good fit for homes that want a softer evergreen smell.

Is a White Pine Right for Your Home?

A White Pine is a great fit if you:

  • Want the softest needles on the lot
  • Decorate mostly with lights, garland and lightweight ornaments
  • Like a natural, feathery look
  • Prefer a mild scent

Have heavy ornaments? Look at the Noble Fir or the Scotch Pine.

Keeping Your White Pine Fresh in Colorado

Denver's dry air and indoor heat can dry out any tree. A few simple steps keep your White Pine soft and green:

  1. 1Get it into water fast. Set up your tree in water within a few hours of getting it home.
  2. 2Never let the stand run dry. A fresh tree drinks a lot in its first few days. Check the stand every morning.
  3. 3Keep it away from heat. Place it away from heater vents, fireplaces and sunny windows.
  4. 4Go light on ornaments. Hang heavier pieces close to the trunk, where the branches are strongest.
